Some no name brand core tools do a similar thing grabbing the very head. The pinch is a dumb idea. Cores come in wildly different width and various tools can get jammed up on the outside in there, loose the core and sink your ship. It happened to me.

rectorseal float switches specifically states you can leave it un-glued and wrap with some pipe tape and jam it together. It's on the packaging if you have questions.
